Why we choose to work with small UK makers and shops

Bob & Friends was never meant to be a shop filled with hundreds of things you could find anywhere else.

When I moved from East London to the Sussex countryside, I started discovering just how many brilliant small businesses were making interesting products of their own. That became a big part of the idea behind Bob & Friends.

Some things in the shop are made by us. The rest are carefully chosen from small UK businesses and independent makers whose products genuinely feel like they belong here.

The quick answer

We choose small UK gift makers because they create products with personality.

Instead of filling the shop for the sake of having more stock, we would rather choose a smaller collection of colourful, funny, useful or unusual things that actually feel worth buying.

We would rather choose well than stock everything

More products does not automatically make a better shop. Too much choice can make finding a gift harder, especially when half of it looks exactly like everything you have already scrolled past elsewhere. That is why Bob & Friends is deliberately curated.

We look for things that make us stop and immediately reminds us of the exact person you would buy it for. The result might be a colourful pair of socks, a hand-dipped candle, quirky jewellery or something completely unexpected.

It just needs to earn its place.

Small businesses make the shop more interesting

Independent businesses can take risks that bigger retailers often do not.

They can make something very specific, very colourful or slightly strange without worrying about whether it needs to appeal to absolutely everyone.

Bob & Friends is not trying to appeal to absolutely everyone either. We are building a shop for people who want gifts with a bit of character, whether that means something colourful, funny, dog-related or simply different from what everyone else is doing. And working with smaller businesses gives us far more interesting things to choose from.

Human ran and human made

There is also a human being behind a small business. When you buy something from Bob & Friends that we have sourced from another independent business, your order supports our little shop and helps us keep supporting theirs too.

It means a purchase can travel through a much smaller chain of actual people rather than disappearing into a huge anonymous retailer, we think that makes shopping a bit more meaningful.

How we choose what makes it into Bob & Friends

We do not stock something simply because it comes from a small business.

It still has to fit, we look for products that feel fun, well made and worth giving. They need enough personality to sit comfortably alongside everything else in the shop.

Most importantly, we have to genuinely like them.

If we would not be excited to give it to somebody ourselves, there is not much point asking you to be.

FAQs

Are all Bob & Friends products handmade?

No. Some products are made by us and others are hand-picked from small UK businesses and independent makers. What matters is that they fit the shop and feel genuinely worth stocking.

Why does Bob & Friends stock a smaller collection?

Because we would rather curate than overwhelm you. A smaller collection makes it easier to find something interesting without scrolling through hundreds of almost identical products.

Supporting small UK businesses is an important part of Bob & Friends and a major focus when we choose products for the shop.

How do you choose which products to stock?

We look for things that are colourful, characterful, useful, funny or unusual. They also need to feel well made and fit naturally with the rest of the Bob & Friends collection.
